Poverty Research Poverty is the state in being poor. It is a major complication in today's world especially in the United States. Poverty has destroyed families, children’s lives, and has caused serious issues for a long period of time. There has been many changes and attempts to solve hardship in America over the past few decades and it hasn’t fully been solved. 14.5 percent of all Americans are in povery and lack material possessions and money. Being in poverty includes financial hardship, hunger, homelessness, illiteracy and lack of medical care. Poverty is a huge concern in the United States concerning children. It can be shown in the things you wear, the amount of income your family makes, where you may live and many other aspects in your life. Poverty can be shown by the free lunches children may get in school (Economist, 31). In 2011 it was estimated that over 1.5 million houses with children have been living off less than $2 a day. Families have been getting noncash benefits including food stamps that can’t do much. Some people are so poor that they have sold their food stamps which is a felony because they feel that cheap clothes from a local thrift-store is critical prior to having food on the table. Businesses convince innocent people in need of cash into buying or giving money so they can swindle them and take their money. Gambling is considered a type of swindling and is also a big reason in today's poverty. Gambling is an addiction and most likely ends up in losing money. Businesses put slot machines powered by very smart computers to distribute very little money which mostly results in loss. The computer is suppose to convince compulsive players that they are in the “zone” and have a great chance of winning gigantic earnings. Gambling is very misleading and mostly never ends well for a family. a family member with a gambling addiction can result in huge debt and trouble. The government makes a huge amount of tax off gambling casinos and must think it is okay with treating the poor like a source of
