What makes people forget about the rules of civilization? Golding's Lord of the Flies shows us how do people ruin their civilization. In the story, Golding uses kids to represent people. He let kids separate into two groups: One group represents the power of civilization which has a conch shell as a symbol, and the other group represents the power of violence which has a sow's head as a symbol. Obviously, the group with conch shell has more organized order because every kid will go to the meeting when the conch shell is blowed. However the other group which has a sow's head as a symbol of violence doesn't have such a good culture stuff. They go hunting whenever they want, and become more wild. Therefore, we can say that conch and head are different symbol of power. The conch shell can force kids go to the meeting, so it gives an organized order in this group. In Lord of the Flies, the leader, Ralph, can give different works to every kid, which makes them have a good requirement to survive, when he blow the conch. This is really important because they must work together to survive on that island. No one can do everything in every part for everyone. The conch shell is also a symbol that every kid should follow. It's used to threaten the group with civilization. When Simon images the head says "we are going to have fun on this island,"(143) it foreshadows that the violence will cover the island. Latter the group with the "Lord of the flies" starts to hunt Ralph, which shows they chose violence as their power. Another evidence shows the sow's head is the symbol of violence is "The head is for the beast.
