The Kite Runner is set in the 1970s, a turbulent point in Afghan history characterized by many power shifts and violence. It marks the last days of the Afghan monarchy and King Zahir Shah who was overthrown by his cousin, Daoud Khan, followed by the invasion of Russia forces, internal civil war, and the rise of the Taliban. The Taliban were initially thought to be saviors, but their rule ended in much bloodshed and corruption. Since the Taliban were Sunnis and Pashtuns, Shiites were persecuted including the Hazaras like Hassan and his family. No places was safe for Hazaras, non-Pashtuns, and Shiites.
Non-Pashtuns, Shiites, and Hazaras were not the only ones to have reason to fear the Taliban. This time period caused much fear among the majority
