Golding considers the desire for power and destruction as something innate and justifies this by stating that humans simply follow certain patterns in their behavior, which they have inherited from their ancestors (Niven 38). The boys in Lord of the Flies illustrate this very clearly, copying the behavior of their parents: competing, fighting and even killing each other for power. Although Ralph’s appearance has some traits of a democratic leader, he uses it to gain the people’s votes and their trust. Ralph is also democratic in that he doesn't try to do the job alone but seeks the help of Piggy and Simon. These two characters have their respective weak points (Piggy is nearsighted and Simon suffers from epileptic spells), but Ralph knows he can count on them. He gives everyone an equal voice and tries to give everyone responsibility.Ralph uses a conch as a way of gathering all of the children and as a talking stick. By these actions, he shows that he wants society to be disciplined.Ralph demonstrates he likes being organized and wants things settled in an organized way. “Which is better–to have laws and agree, or to hunt and kill?” (180). Piggy tries to come to a solution to the misunderstanding and for the fighting by asking the civilization whether they prefer to kill each other, or to agree with each other. This made Ralph think about what Piggy said. That is why democracy’s perk on having freedom of speech really helps with improving the civilization because the people have the freedom of giving their opinions.
