Throughout the course of history, influential women taught that female oppression still exists in society. To fight the battle, these singular women took measures to ensure an equal society. Queen Elizabeth I challenged the status quo and became the first unmarried queen of England, dismissing all critics who doubted her feminine authority (Hanson). Susan B. Anthony dauntlessly fought for women’s suffrage in America, leading to several women casting votes in subsequent elections (Patrick). Despite bullets piercing her body, Malala Yousafzai continued to challenge the Taliban in Pakistan, arguing that education is a fundamental right for all citizens, including girls (Malala). Upon realizing his sword’s uselessness, Beowulf utilized solely his superhuman strength to conquer Grendel’s mother. Similarly, Grendel’s mother employed her sharp claws and great strength to kill Beowulf. Like the female leaders who led change in their respective societies, Anglo-Norman society is of the past. However, gender inequality still exists, as new struggles for women continue to emerge in modern society. Most notably, Yemeni women lack personal freedom, for they are prohibited from leaving their homes without a man’s permission (Al-Sakkaf). Nigerian women face violence each day, as they’re legally subject to a husband’s physical abuse (Bazza). It is important to understand issues facing women today, as knowing and understanding are the first steps to solving the issue. However, society doesn’t have to wait for a “Susan B. Anthony” or “Malala” to change society. If individuals mirror the passion and courage each leader exhibited, they will be the change society needs right
