Prejudice amongst African-Americans was still very prevalent, especially in the Deep South, after slavery was abolished. Sadly, prejudice and discrimination is still well and alive today. The Help is a movie that displayed African American women being treated as though they were slaves and second class citizens. In the late 1960’s the movie illustrated acts of prejudices and discrimination against African American women. Racial discrimination, Civil Right issues, and social injustice of African American’s in the South were all depicted in the movie. Aibileen and Minny were two of the main characters that worked as maids in the movie and faced many hardships and were continuously mistreated by their employers. Skeeter, an inspiring writer, was enraged by the racial inequality of the black maids that basically raised her. She set out to convince the maids to let their voice be heard through her book. Skeeter explained the opportunity they would have to express themselves in a book that would tell their life experiences and their viewpoint of being a black maid of white wealthy families while sacrificing taking care of their own families. Faced with oppression, discrimination and social injustice the minority group of women fought to get through a day’s work.

It is unfortunate that they are still seen as slaves to many of their employers. The black women faced racial discrimination, social inequality, and violation of their legal rights by the dominant group of people. However, in the end, the women’s voice was allowed to be heard because of Skeeter, a young wealthy white woman that wanted equality for all people not just for the dominant group. The women had the pleasure of making people aware of their working conditions, racism, abuse and more that the girls went through daily from a group of women that they
