Aren’t babies supposed to be cute, innocent, and protected? Life is supposed to be a precious thing that we value very much. Reproduction is important to maintain life on Earth, but there are doctors that are experimenting that could potentially destroy lives. There is evidence of unethical experiments on premature babies. The most recent study found was taking place from 2004 to 2009, so it happened a few years ago. According to The Diane Rhem Show, the University of Iowa was one of the colleges to part take in these studies. Studies have been really close to home. Two hours away from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Someone close to your heart may have been effected by these experiments. A premature baby is a baby born before 37 weeks of their mother’s pregnancy with them. In the United States one in ten babies are born before 40 weeks (2015 Premature Birth Report Cards). Most everyone knows at least one person who was born prematurely. The study done was called the SUPPORT study. SUPPORT stands for Surfactant, Positive Pressure and Oxygenation Randomized Trial. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the one who is in charge of the SUPPORT study on premature babies that pose unethical behaviors that could potentially result in eyesight disorders, respiratory …show more content…
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Birmingham, Alabama and the lawsuit is representing all who participated in the study with damages exceeding five million dollars. These studies were done between 2004 and 2009, in Alabama, to five infants who were involved with the lawsuit. They filed the lawsuit on August 18th, 2013. It is still pretty fresh, however, a federal office overseeing human subject experiments wrote a letter to the University of Alabama criticizing them for not warning parents or guardians of all the health risks involved with the experiments.
