The closer the pregnancy can be prolonged to forty weeks, the less risky the pregnancy and the healthier the baby can be. Due to this, thirty weeks gestation and higher have significantly high survival rates. The vast majority of babies born between thirty and thirty-three weeks after conception survive; between ninety and ninety-five percent of these babies will survive birth. (Linden, Paroli, and Doron 51) For babies thirty-four weeks and higher, the survival rate is nearly the same as a full-term pregnancy. Most of the babies born within the thirty and forty week range will not suffer any long-term difficulties or serious health issues. (Linden, Paroli, and Doron 52) With everything that doctors and nurses know and are capable of doing today, it is easier to feel much more at ease when you are in this range and have no other choice but to deliver your child. A premature baby will not be capable of maintaining their body temperature the same as a full term baby would be able to. Due to that, the baby will require a warming bed to keep their temperature where it needs to be. The baby may also require equipment to help it breathe. Since it is a premature baby, it may not be able to breathe on its own yet. The baby may come into the world needing immediate resuscitation, which means that they will need extra oxygen and may need to be put on a ventilator. (Linden, Paroli, and Doron 60) If that is not the case, the mother may be able to see her baby for a few minutes, but more than likely, they will need constant monitoring and could quite possibly be put into a separate stabilization room where neither the mother nor the father will be allowed to see the baby just yet.
