President Reagan’s Challenger speech fulfills Lucas’s expectations of a good commemorative speech in a number of ways. I noticed that the speech started by fitting the speech with the occasion, as Lucas (2015) describes a good commemorative speech as; “they aim to fit the special needs of a special occasion (p.359). Although this was a sad occasion about the death of seven people, it was brief, approximately 650 words to my count. There was no need for an introduction since President Regan was a well-known figure, and it was appropriate that he deliver this commemorative speech.
The speaker identified himself with the audience in the tragedy of the moment in marking the occasion as a personal and national loss. According to Lucas (2015) “creating
