Jane Austen, a well known English author, in her novel, Pride and Prejudice, addresses the topic of pride and suggests that it is very common for someone to have pride, and how vain and pride are often mistaken for one another. Austen supports her suggestion by defining what it means to have pride and by describing how pride and vanity are two different things, though they are used interchangeably. Her purpose is to make the reader aware of the difference between pride and vanity in order to give the reader the proper mindset when understanding a character’s actions later in the novel. She establishes a thoughtful tone with her educated audience from the 19th century.
