The name Disney instantly pops into the average American's mind when Mickey's silhouette is seen or a section of "When You Wish Upon a Star" is heard. Disney is iconic, and has played a role in the childhoods of many. It is the epitome of goodness and is always associated with happy endings. But, though the term 'Disney' encompasses these ideals, there has been a shift in themes and messages since the Golden Age. More modern Disney films, such as The Princess and the Frog (2009) explore stronger storylines and lessons than classics like Cinderella (1950). Regardless of the sweet nature and cheerful plot of Cinderella, the label of better movie must go to The Princess and the Frog with it's new spin on "classic Disney." In Cinderella, the Disney standard is fulfilled with a prince rescuing a princess from her fate. Love comes immediately and without any background for it to be built upon. And as expected, everything revolves around the decisions the male lead makes. The only transformation that is seen in Cinderella is of the princess herself and it benefits her immediately. She intentionally deceives Prince Charming to gain his affection, and this plan eventually works. Her fate is created by others and her singular goal is to be free. The story is told is chronological order, including little to no humor and a minuscule influence from music. The plot of Cinderella, though enjoyable, is too straightforward with an outcome that surprised no one. On the other hand, The Princess and the Frog broke the mold. Instead of having a prince save a 'damsel in distress,' the princess and frog prince learn from each other and are mutually rescued. Their love is slow and began as a friendship before evolving into more. Each of the leads' decisions contribute to the plot. There are multiple transformations in the movie; one with Naveen becoming a frog and Lawrence becoming Naveen, in the next Tiana becomes a 'princess,' third Tiana changes into a frog, and finally everyone transforms to their original state. Cinderella has simple, easy to imitate music. Most of the soundtrack is vocal and non-essential to the story. The type of music in the movie is classified as classical and children's music. Instruments aren't used to enhance the songs, which serve only a background for the events in film. The era and setting are not very well depicted in the soundtrack. The light and happy songs of Cinderella provide little entertainment out of context, notwithstanding the enjoyment they bring within the movie. Discordantly, The Princess and the Frog has a soundtrack that intertwines with its plot. Songs give the viewer relevant information. The soundtrack is both vocal and instrumental. The genres included in the film are jazz and Cajun (zydeco). The setting is reflected in the music. Pieces from the film are compelling no matter where they are heard. The soundtrack shows bounds for Disney to include more eclectic music in a franchise that hasn't seen much change. Music in The Princess and the Frog is catchy and adds to the experience of the movie, while Cinderella has a soundtrack that is delightful but doesn't lend itself to improving the
