This essay will be exploring uncertainty reduction theory. We will explore its applications to romantic relationships through the movie “The Princess Bride”. The couples involved are Westley/Buttercup and Prince Humperdinck/Buttercup. Uncertainty in relation to romantic relationships is both very stressful and important it affects everything, from the uncertainties of those first verbal connections to the levels of intimacy within romantic relationships. Also, I will further explore how the degrees in uncertainty are affected with these couples when things like similarities and the degrees or liking each other change. The uncertainty reduction theory proves to be true in romantic relationships, however it is sometimes proven false if the intentions or personalities of those involved clash. Uncertainty reduction theory is within every romantic relationship regardless if the relationship works or if the personalities clash.

At the beginning of their reacquaintance when Westley heard from Buttercup that the day she though he had died that she had died inside he became completely certain in their love and liked her even more. For Buttercup when they were in the Fire Swamp and she learned just how far Westley went to survive and come home to her she loved him deeper than before. This removed all uncertainty in their relationship for her and she liked every aspect of him. The opposite happened for Buttercup when she learned more about Prince Humperdinck, as she became more certain about him she disliked him and eventually despised him. Uncertainty within these romantic relationships doesn’t always stem from how well you know a person, but it is a crucial part of the journey in every romantic
