Issues In The Prison system Essay Outline

The Prison system in the Untied states is flawed to say the least. The growing number of people incarcerated everyday is alarming. There are many issues in the prison system today, including: Overpopulation, Prison Privatization, Gang activity, Mental illness and many many more. Of course there are thousands of dangerous criminals that need to be behind bars, but there are also people sentenced to years in jail for petty or drug related crimes. America struggles with these problems everyday and there is no clear conclusion in sight. America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. We have more then 1.3 more people behind bars then china, while china is more then triple our size. Prison overpopulation became apparent during and after the great depression when crime skyrocketed. Even more so when the tough on drug and three sticks laws were passed. Mandatory minimums were put in place and prisons began overflowing. There have been dozens of complaints filled do to lack of space and excess number of prisoner per prison. In the past few years the Obama administration has worked to reduce jail time for federal prisoners in for some drug offenses. In jail they treated like normal inmates, as result there are many schizophrenic outburst from inmates. This causes riots and manic outbursts. In the case of a man in a Mississippi jail, he was having a schizophrenic episode and stabbed his cells mates eyes out with a pencil. This man was then send to solitary confinement for thirteen years instead of getting the mental help necessary. In America there are around 356,268 inmates with severer mental illnesses.
