Privacy over Luxury In today’s world the line between what is private and public has become so indistinct to the point where a Google or Facebook search can give you details on virtually anyone. Telematics is a data gathering tool used by insurance companies to gather motorist data. While telematics has been endorsed as beneficial technological advancement by the a group of authors at IBM there are some like Andrew Clark, Globe and Mail, who may argue telematics may be a cloaked privacy intrusion tool. IBM provides collected data to support telematics, Clark supports his view using past use of telematics. Telematics is being presented as a boon for drivers, but the privacy threats it possess have been discussed by both articles. The article from IBM states that data collected by the telematics insurance providers would be collected in real time. This issue is also supported by Clark’s article. Clark also argues that the data will consist of very detailed vehicle use and also expresses concern regarding the sensitivity of the sensors and its effect on user behavior. On the other, the article by IBM suggests that the effect on users caused by the motion of constant surveillance is beneficial due to the user being much more compelled to operate the vehicle in an orderly manner. Clark, in his article, counters said argument by detailing the case of Oliver Pain. Even though the two articles push for different objectives regarding telematics, they both concur that telematics involves private data collection on very large scale. In conclusion,
