Privilege Tal Fortgang Analysis

Nobody chooses to have privilege. Tal Fortgang is a white male who feels no need to apologize for having privilege. His grandfather and brother flee their home as tenagers when the Nazis invaded Poland. Fortgang claims that his family suffered to give him a better life. Privilege in this case privilege means the right that is given to others who have accepted identities. Fortgang demonstrates how privilege isn’t something someone chooses to have.

Tal Fortgang article represents how privilege isn’t something that we want to gain or that we even bother in choosing to have. Privilege was given to us through birth and ever since we’ve carried it with us. Fortgang states, “My appearance certainly doesn’t tell the whole story, and to assume that it does and that I should apologize for it is insulting” (Fortgang 2).

All because he is actually privilege, when there’s others who work hard but don’t have the same opportunities as he does. Fortgang never stated that he didn’t have privilege. Throughout his article he is bringing up the history of his ancestors because if they were privilege, than it would have been passed down to him no matter what. “...check your privilege and realize that nothing you have accomplished is real” (Fortgang 1). Everything we’ve done throughout our lives doesn’t give us privilege. Others may work hard and not have the same opportunities but there’s some who work hard yet don’t have the same opportunities. White males are not the only ones who can relate to Fortgang article but other identities who have privilege yet are targeted by one or two of their identities. There’s many out there who haven’t checked their privilege the correct way, and many of us don’t realize how little of a privilege we have. When there’s other people in other countries who have no kind of privilege at
