Mrs. Rader 8th Hour Language Arts 1 March 2024 Are Highly Qualified Athletes Overpaid for Their Services? “Someone who tosses a ball shouldn’t earn 700 times as much as someone who saves lives.”(Spector, para 4-5). Numerous individuals hold the opinion that athletes, a person most young people look up to, should receive lower compensation, however, I disagree with this notion due to a variety of factors. Professional athletes do not make all that much money because they challenge themselves to not settle for average, their organizations make billions of them, and the athlete can’t choose how much money they are offered. Plus, an underlying reason is that athletes don’t have decision-making authority over how much they are offered. The article “Are Pro Athletes Overpaid” straightforwardly states, “However, it’s not the athlete's fault that their wages are so high.”(Spector para 5). They later state, “The main problem is the huge amount of money involved in professional sports.”(Spectator, para 5). The athletes aren’t the ones making too much money; it's the business owners and sports associations hauling in the big bucks that control the athletes compensation. Thus, in layman's terms, the athletes get all the money they deserve, but the people who own the sports teams are becoming billionaires in the span of a few years, subsequently proving that athletes aren’t over compensated for their work. To contradict this view, a significant number of non-professionals believe that athletes are being compensated excessively, citing reasons such as the fact that many athletes possess luxuries that are beyond the means of even first
