Parents have a complex decision to make whether or not to have their child vaccinated as a newborn. Many doctors give the impression that there is no option when it comes to vaccinations. A parent needs to be knowledgeable and take charge of a child's health and every encounter with the doctor. There are many risks to vaccinating a newborn. However, there are many health benefits to not vaccinating newborns. Vaccinating a newborn continues to be a controversial issue. Though it is normal to vaccinate, vaccinations should not be given to newborns because it puts them at risk for numerous health problems. Not everyone knows about the history behind vaccines. Vaccinations came to be in the 1700's because there were diseases that killed thousands of people at a time, like polio and malaria. Doctors have looked at 323,247 medical records to compare children under 2 years of age who were fully vaccinated at CDC recommended ages to children who were under vaccinated because of parental choice. They found that the children who were under vaccinated the most had lower impatient admission rates and significantly lower rates of outpatient and emergency department visits (Miller 18). This is largely because those children who are not vaccinated are not introduced to those toxins at such an early age. They have an all natural immune system that has learned how to fight diseases on its own. Those children who are vaccinated at such an early age have that virus living in their body. Their immune system has never had to fight off disease on its own, therefore, making it weaker.
