The concept of probation was first introduced as a method of helping children avoid imprisonment in the early nineteenth century and even though the process has transformed quite a bit since then, public distaste for incarcerating children has not changed. For reasons explained below the probation officer unofficially acts as both social worker and police officer.
Our textbook explains that the path to delinquency, more often than not, begins in childhood. There are many social, psychological, and behavioral theories addressing the reasons children engage in delinquent behavior and since most probation conditions require the offender to meet with his/her probation officer on a routine basis, this gives the probation officer an opportunity
