The transformation of the U.S. government continued as the Progressive Era began to develop. The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States, from the 1890s to the 1920s. The Progressive movement arose as citizens sought to regulate private industry, strengthen protections for workers and consumers, expose corruption in both government and big business, and generally improve society. As the giant business consolidations emerged there arose a simultaneous demand for their regulation. These government efforts toward regulating business characterized the Progressive Era.
