What it means to be a profession There are many professions in the world today to include doctors, engineers, and scientists. To be considered a profession, the product that it produces must be unique and beneficial to modern man. Public opinion weighs heavily on determining whether or not the profession is necessary. If the profession isn't needed, it will swiftly meet its demise.
The Balancing Role of the Profession's Leaders The Army itself has been considered a profession for over 200 years. According to Robert L. Heiss (2012), "The 1820s and 1830s cemented the professionalization of the United States Army. The War of 1812, however, was the key to the professionalization of the army." (Heiss, 2012, p. 103)
In order for the Army to remain professionalized, it has to be kept "balanced." They do this in two different areas. The first area is to keep the Army's four fields of expertise and its current and potential future operating environment

The Army's culture is very different from this model. The Army's culture is a system made up of a shared meaning between Soldiers and the practices of the organization. These practices tend to change based off of need. It happens almost unconsciously. This is due to the human bonding that occurs while wearing the uniform. Soldiers are put through rigorous, strenuous training and combat situations that bring them together. The relationships between “battle buddies” are sometimes stronger than family
