Democritus claimed that everything is made up of atoms. These atoms are physically, but not geometrically, indivisible; between atoms lies empty space; atoms are indestructible; have always been, and always will be, in motion; there are an infinite number of atoms and kinds of atoms, which differ in shape, and size.

Dalton believed that elements are made of small particles called atoms. He also believed that atoms of different elements had specific, shapes, and other properties. He stated that atoms could not be subdivided, created, or destroyed. Another point was that atoms of different elements in whole-number simple ratios to form chemical compounds. The last point was that in chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or rearranged.

Some key points in Ernest's theory was that the electron cloud does not influence alpha particle scattering. He also mentions that that most of the atom's charge is relatively tiny in volume at the center. He also found that the magnitude is equal to the atomic mass. The remaining mass is neutrons. He also points out that heavy atoms are concentrated in the central charge region.

James Chadwick predicted that atom had a neutron. He also established that the atomic number was determined by the number of protons in the atom. As well as that, he discovered the fourth subatomic particle, the neutron.

In Bohr's theory he found that electrons orbit the nucleus. The electrons can orbit only stably in at a certain distance from the
