Guardians: Traditional educational methods will be utilized to meet the predisposing and environmental enabling objective. A convenience sample of the target population will volunteer to complete eight educational sessions, meeting once a week for two hours. Flyers promoting the program will be provided to local healthcare offices, federal assistance offices, and area elementary schools. Referrals from healthcare providers will be encouraged and accepted. The meetings will take place at central community locations, such as a library or at an elementary school in the area. Ten separate classes, limited to ten participants each, for a total of 100 participants will be held at strategic locations throughout Chatham County, based upon proximity for the majority of participants. During the eight sessions, there will be a series of lectures explaining the dangers of lead, to include potential health effects. During session three there will be testimony from a parent of a child that had lead poisoning. A health educator will discuss prevention methods and ways that lead may enter your home, as well as what behaviors both child and parent may need to change. During the session two and six, parents/guardians will be given the opportunity to have their children, if eligible, screened for lead poisoning by a healthcare professional. Information will be provided about how to access testing in the community should they decline the screening offered during the sessions. During the last session, participants will be asked to complete the post-test and will be provided certificates of completion if they attended all
