Selena is a Mexican teenager who immigrated to the United States with her family in a hope of a better life. Her English is not very good, but she is looking forward to go to high school and learn English. After beginning high school, she is forced to take English as a second language class with all material being thought in English, and no one speaks Spanish to help her understand it. Today I am here to inform you about why you should vote yes on Proposition 58. Proposition 58 was designed by legislators to repeal the English- only immersion requirement and waiver provisions required by Proposition 227 of 1998. Voting yes on proposition 58 is not only important for non- English immigrants but for the future of our country as well. This is …show more content…
We live in a country that was found by immigrants, so it is very important to respect immigrants and find a way to help them become successful. It’s not only for them, but for the future of our country as well. Helping them learn English means more students will go to Universities and will achieve higher-level degrees and our country will become more successful. As Jennifer Medina quotes Hilda Maldonado in her October 18, 2016 article in NY Times “[I] would expect many more students to enroll in dual-language classes and other programs that allowed them to retain their native language. There are also job postings in the region that routinely require Spanish or some other foreign languages.”
In conclusion, There are many benefits that propositions 58 has, such as allowing all students to become proficient in English, Restoring local control for California schools, and preparing students more effectively for the future. It is very important to vote yes on Proposition 58 this November, for the future of ourselves and people like Selena, who ended up working at a McDonald’s for the rest of her life, simply because she couldn’t properly learn English in her high school and was forced to drop of school. So remember to vote yes on proposition 58 this
