Kantian ethics states that moral rules have no exceptions and are absolute. Kant also says moral rules are not decided by religion or emotion but reason instead. We must use reason to decide if the rule or “maxim” we are following is moral by figuring out if the rule we are following should become a universal rule. If we don’t want it to become a universal rule then the rule is forbidden and should not be followed.
One of the major pros for Kantian ethics is that it values the individual. Kant says that people should not be used as a means to end and treat each person with respect. He goes on to say that people should be thought of as rational beings who are capable of making their own decisions who should not be forced to do things against their will. She used the example of a bank teller that is used as a means to an end for the person depositing a check to get money while the teller is using the person with the check as a means to earn a paycheck. These interaction are okay because each person consents. When it’s not okay is when one party is either deceived or forced into something without their consent. If a person is deceived they would not know the true intent of the person lying. The person lying could be doing something that goes against the morales of the person but to the liar they are just a tool to be used for their own gain which Kant states is immoral.
I would say that Hobbes’ theory is the one I find more intuitive. I believe his theory is the one that is more practical in today's world. People today do work together and follow the rules but most people are doing what is in their best interests. Capitalism is an example where companies are people working together to achieve a mutual goal. But each person is working for their own interests like getting a promotion, to get paid more, to then buy more of what they want and
