In my literature circle, we read “Kira, Kira” By Cynthia Kadonota, this book is about a girl named Kate, who goes through many life changing events as a child. Going through racism, death, and grief as she’s growing up. This is also a memoir of her sister Lynn, who passes away from Lymphoma. Her sister Lynn was someone she looked up to and who took care of her. They shared a special bond with a special word “Kira, Kira.” We each brought in key points, each role brought in what they were suppose to do and each of us was able to connect and start up a discussion to support or create a debate about the reading. As part of our presentation, we decided to change this literature into a children’s literature and change the cover to represent the book. We condensed the story and wrote as if a child the one who wrote it along with visual aid to provide more of an understanding for a child. Students can support each other while constructing their own understanding of the literature. The advantages and strength of this literacy practice can also ensure full class participation because each student are given each role that carries a responsibility. Each role can deepen students understanding of the literature and expand their literacy and the background knowledge. This makes students more knowledgeable of the literature and each student is in solely responsible for carrying their own weight. This also shows commitment to the reading and engage students to meaningful literary discussions. Having this practice can also help students see the value of responses and contribution to the group.
