Madison writes, "It is of great importance in a republic, not only to gaurd society against the oppression of its rulers, but to gaurd one part of the society against the injustice of the other part." We are all created equally therefore no majority or minority should use its power to violate the basic and inalienable rights of the people, but be considerate to ensure that all rights are respected. In order for our government to properly function, balance must be present between the majority and the minorites. Our Founders understood people have skewed views that could potentially influence another persons fate. The Founders feared that majority rules trumping minority rights would eventually lead to a totalitarian government (We the people). Government plays a very big role in protecting our rights, although the government is know for overstepping and threatning our freedoms such as increased wire taps and other forms of survelience, we also use it to secure our freedom. In the 1960s when the civil rights and voting rights of African of Americans were being violated the government intervened and in 1964 the Civil Rights Acts were formed banning discrimination based on "race, color, religion, or national origin" in employment practices and in public, along with the Voting Acts Right of 1965.
