The United States Corrections System has flaws. There are more inmates in America than any other country in the world. The prison system is under stress for resources, it is overcrowded, and it is depleting financial assets. With such a dire situation both socially and economically, there results underlying human rights abuses. These abuses can range from physical mistreatment, excessive punishment, lack of rehabilitation, lack of opportunity, and others. One major abuse has to do with the infringement on some basic human rights laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the US Constitution, and religious and philosophical origins of human rights all across the world. A failure to educate or prepare for a return to society often lands inmates back in prison. This trend of people briefly exiting prison and shortly thereafter reoffending and returning to prison is known as recidivism. Recidivism is growing into a significant issue as more than half of those released from prison find their way back behind bars. There are many studies into different ways to reduce the recidivism rate. One proven way is through education and preparation programs while inmates as still locked up.
