The Controversy on Teen Driving Imagine sitting in a hospital room waiting to see if a loved who was involved in a car crash was going to live or not. Your mind is thinking of all the worst things the car crash could have done and you begin to panic. You feel like there is hope, but then all of the sudden all you hear is the buzz of the straight line on the heart monitor right next to you. Not only did your loved ones heart stop, but your heart begins to stop too. This situation is all too recognized in the world we live in today. Young teens everywhere are involved in crashes daily which almost always lead to death and is causing great strain to anyone who knows the deceased and to our society as a whole. Robert Davis says that in order for the young teens to drive they have to drive 50 hours with their permet with a parental guardian before getting their unrestricted licence. Research also shows that the states who have the graduated driver’s licensing programs have noticed a 20-40% decreases in crashes of 16 and 17 year olds. Though you think that would be enough practice and from graduating from the classes, studies done by Davis have proven that this is not the case and one of five 16 year olds will take ownership in a car crash that has been reported in their first year of driving. People don’t realize the impact this has on society and Liza Darwin says “raising the driving age from 16 to 17 would benefit society as a whole.” Even though this might become frustrating to teens and may be difficult for parents Liza also says, “it makes sense to raise the driving age to save more lives.” Not to mention that the number one reason for death of teens in the United States is car wrecks says Lori Johnston.
