The widespread use of drones - an ongoing debate that has people comparing its ethical ramifications, against those who claim that this technology has great potential and should be freely available to all, is indeed one that incites passionate discussions. Drones or unmanned aerial vehicles are a type of aircraft that is commonly used nowadays for its ability to operate effectively without the need for human presence on board. I strongly support the idea that the federal government should extend the sale and use of drones to one and all, as drones have the potential to substitute military operations, create thousands of jobs and transform key sectors such as agriculture. However, it is imperative that new safety regulations be created to accompany …show more content…
This is a great advantage to the military, where preserving the lives of soldiers while still maintaining a high level of precision is a high priority. For example, in the last few decades, thousands of soldiers sent to the Middle East perished while combating terrorist forces. The use of drones could have conducted the same operations more effectively while minimizing soldier fatalities. Military drones such as the MQ-9 Reaper are capable of reconnaissance, and can also be outfitted with weapons to make it a lethal contender for any military operation. Furthermore, drones are relatively inexpensive as they require fewer human interactions and simpler designs. In fact, federal administration predicts 487 billions in cuts over the next decade with the introduction of drones to substitute soldiers and other naval ships. Many people are distressed by the prospect that the government or a neighbor could be watching your every move. Therefore, to many, this constitutes the opposite of what it means to live in a free society and has led many to justifiably petition against the widespread use of domestic drones. One specific example involves UAV's interfering with target communications. Applications such as Snoopy, allow the drone to steal data from smartphones searching for open wireless networks. Snoopy could be used to gain sensitive information, ranging anywhere from location data to credit card numbers. The potential threat of cyber-espionage using drones is also a huge concern to many companies. Drones pose an enormous threat in hacking company networks, and the ability to shrink drones and remotely conduct operations increases potential risk. Another concern involves hobbyist use of drones to endanger safety of commercial airplanes. The lack of regulation for drones used by civilians can result in disastrous collisions between both aircraft, unnecessarily risking the lives of
