Unfortunately, car accidents are common occurrences. For example, 5.2 million car accidents occur annually (How). If there was some factor that could increase the possibility of car accidents, most individuals would choose to eliminate that issue, not accentuate it. A proposal was made to raise the speed limit on two- lane highways. Some people speed on the roads already, so raising the speed limit would cause those who already push, and pass, that limit to speed even more. Fatality rates could also increase as accidents are more dangerous at higher speeds. Some people believe that speeding is okay because they arrive at their destinations quicker, but in turn, put others in danger of injury or death with their excessive speeding. A study from 2006 states that the likeness of drivers being in an accident while speeding increases two percent, the chance of injury by three percent, and chances of fatality by four percent (A Little). There can be other factors involved in causing a car accident, no matter how fast one is driving. Distractions such as loud music, friends, texting, drinking, or eating may result in a driver taking his or her attention away from the road, further increasing the chances of an accident. Certainly, many people consider themselves skilled drivers and believe they would be able to handle the higher speed limit, and that may be possible. However, there are also many unskilled drivers on the road who would struggle to handle the higher speed limit on the two-lane highways. Distractions which prevent drivers from giving full attention to the road still exist. And increasing the speed limit could put distracted drivers or attentive drivers in greater danger of serious or fatal
