Many of the victims would normally be arrested, charged and convicted for prostitution, making it more difficult for these victims to be more effectively introduced back into the mainstream and later garner employment due to the criminal record. With the fear of prison and deportation inflicted on the victims by their oppressors, many of them go untreated for their traumas and find it harder to reincorporate into society. It is this fear that contributes to the hindrance during their recovery is the limited ability to trust. This has been attributed to situations in which law enforcement officers have beaten or in some cases raped the victims. Another contributing factor posing obstacles in the recovery is the HIV positive status of the victims.
