Protagonist’s personality traits & motivation (why did they do what they did?) - The protagonist in The Lottery is Tessie, because she is really the only one who goes through any significant change in the story. She is very conflicted with her feelings with that she believes that the lottery is a tradition and should be respected but when she ends up getting picked for the lottery she says that it’s not fair, and it’s not right.
In the story, Tessie is also made out to be somewhat of a free spirit, with her even saying the she forgot what day it was because she was doing chores.
