The Use of Protein Supplements: Athletes Versus Bodybuilders Shia LaBeuof once said, “I drink protein shakes nonstop - three or four a day - and I run a lot, so you get rid of the bad carbs and keep the rest so you have the energy to make it through.” When reading this quote about protein shakes from Shia Labeuof, it made me wonder what the best protein supplements to consume after physical activities or lifting weights. As I read his quote, it made me want to explore how he could possibly drink protein shakes three to four times a day and not have them damage his digestive system. From experiences of drinking protein supplements, LaBeuof’s quote seems to be incorrect. It may be different for someone who is more active and need protein supplements in his or her diet. This is what inspired me to study post workout protein supplements. I wanted to find out composition of the ingredients and their effect on athletes and find a way to decipher a different type of labeling for different types of people, “athletes versus body builders.” When most people hear the word protein, they think of red meat, eggs, beans, and chicken. Casein best provides protein for the human body. Twenty grams of casein protein within two hours of working out is the most effective (Duvall). The protein in casein helps muscles grow larger and has a steady nutritional support for the body. This type of protein has a longer refuel point, and helps promote muscle hypertrophy and enhance great gains in strength (McLellan). This protein would best be used for a meal replacer because it helps fuel the body longer than whey and soy proteins.
