Carl, a 16 year old boy with Asperger Syndrome, was sent to the principal’s office a number of times this school year for arguing with his teachers. Carl frequently claimed that someone was looking at him funny, when in reality, no one was looking at him at all. The teachers constantly told Carl that no one was looking at him, Carl did not believe the teachers, he was sure that someone really was looking at him funny and he could not understand why the teachers did not believe him. Due to this lack of understanding from his teachers, he would frequently become increasingly agitated and argumentative telling them that they were wrong. His teachers could not figure out why he would get so upset and why he couldn’t just believe them when they would tell him that no one is looking at him funny.
After reading Chapter 1 in the book, Autism Spectrum Disorders written by E. Amanda Boutot and Brenda Smith Myles, I believe this is an example of the ASD trait Theory of Mind (Boutot & Myles, 2011, p. 19).

If there were funny looks, I would address that issue with the guilty student. Hopefully if Carl saw me watching the other students then maybe he would be able to trust me and believe that I am going to help him. Then, when I said no one was looking at him funny, he would believe me because he trusts me. However, according to the scenario, no one was looking at Carl funny. I think trust is a major issue with Carl, it appears that he may be frightened or worried that something may happen. I would try to talk softly with a reassuring tone that everything is going to be ok. I would not send Carl to the office unless it was the last
