Mary’s Perspective

In this scenario, Mary believes that she is performing well when compared to those around her despite making “small mistakes.” I came to this conclusion about her because per the case study “Mary believes she is better than the others on the team.” When someone says or believes that they are better than the people around them, it is safe to assume that they consider themselves above average. Thus, Mary’s perception is that her performance is good and she will be expecting a good review from her boss. Furthermore, Mary believes that she is performing the core aspect of her job well which is answering customers call promptly. Usually, employees receive bonus and promotions based on their performance review. Thus, having my issues addressed in this meeting all at once can hurt my prospects within the company. Furthermore, I believed that I was doing a good job answering customer calls. Finding out that the boss had a problem with the way I handled customers service jobs can demoralize me and hurt my productivity. However, if the feedback is constructive, I could learn from it and improve my performance in the future.

Important Area that James could Address

James could discuss career development and future opportunities at the company to motivate Mary to improve her performance. James should outline clear expectations that Mary needs to meet to move up in the company such as performance targets, customer satisfaction, and employee compliance. This will give Mary hope and achievable goals the set can work on because she performed at that level before. In this scenario, Mary may feel like she is at the bottom of the totem pole during to this one bad review. So, it is important to remind her that she is still important to the company.
