This week was an interesting week, especially my time with Mary. The staff meeting that is normally conducted was replaced with case reviews from staff members. It was interesting that some wanted to just report the case and others were looking for assistance. At lease they appeared to have wanted some assistance. I offered input on most of the cases that I felt comfortable and knowledge about the subject matter. There were some I asked questions to learn about SW competency. There was one case where I was biased or at least optimal that the gut deserved to go to jail. I did learn that the clinician’s role is to simply treat the client. I learned that there were several interventions I will need to learn such as EMT, something to do with erasing nightmares in individuals affected by sexual abuse. I wrote down several acronyms I had no clue what they meant. Why use acronyms in a room of interns? There are only 8 staff members, but only 5 were present and there are 10 interns, but that brings me to my thought I have been circling around since I have arrived. We are interns not employees! Yes, we bring a broad view of experience and some work experience, but we are not MSW and PC yet (that is why we are here). The training was insightful by offering information on how to include substance use as a part of an assessment. I was informed on the “new drugs” of the 21st century and their side effects. I understand more how this agency works, jump in do the assessments and cases, and you will be trained as you go along. I do not understand why they do not spend the first two months training you then incorporate cases into your schedule. I would say as ass backwards if you ask me.
