The grade I deserve on a test is a reflection of the amount of hard work I put in to the material, regardless of how much time another student was able to put in. Whether or not that student put in as much time as I did, or double the amount of time, should not affect the grade that I achieved. Furthermore, the question never stated that the person taking the Ritalin was abusing it to study, or genuinely needed the medicine to help stay focused because he/she had ADHD. In either case, I think it is really none of my business to dictate what medicines a person should take. Many times we think we know a person, but we don’t know the real story behind their reasoning or actions. There could be some type of pressure or necessity, such as a disorder, that required them to take the medication.

When we think of America, we think of the “land of the free.” Then why are we suddenly trying to control what a fellow classmate does? I personally don’t think anyone appointed me to be the moral police and tell others what they can and cannot do. This situation is analogous to a person drinking a glass of wine before giving a presentation to help calm them down. A person used a drug to help enhance their performance, but why don’t we take any objection then? There are many other examples of times that we use caffeine or other stimulants to help us focus or do better on a test, and that never seems to be an issue or objection.
