I am going to describe and identify advantages and disadvantages of the four major theories of personality (psychodynamic, trait or five-factor model, humanistic, and social-cognitive).
Sigmund Freud was the first one proposed of theory Psychoanalysis. Personalities arise because of attempts to resolve conflicts between unconscious sexual and aggresive impulses and societal demands to restrain these impulses. Freud believed that the mental processes are conscious, unconscious and preconscious. One advantage of this psychodynamic theory is the defense mechanisms. One disadvantage of this psychdynamic theory is the rejecting of free will.
Dr. Franz Joseph Gall was a german physician who came up with the five-factor model. This is a model based on common language descriptors of personality. The five factors are defined as openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. One advantage of the five-factor model is there has been increasing evidence to support the big five traits of personality. One disadvantage is the five-factor model is extraversion, neuroticism, and openess generally decreases as a person ages.
