According to the psychodynamic theory mental illness is caused by a failure to resolve conflicts arose in childhood which is caused by phenomena called repression. Repression occurs when one’s conscious and unconscious parts of the mind comes into conflict. The psychodynamic theory suggested that a conflict must be resolved successfully to overcome repression and achieve healthy mindset.
There are multiple explanations in the theory that explain why a person might develop depression.
