Psychology

Psychology is a type of science that studies the mind and behavior. Its goal is to understand humanity by both discovering general principles and exploring specific cases, and its ultimate aim is to benefit society. They are concerned with peoples' emotions, stress and abnormal behavior. Psychology requires good education, strong communication skills, and patience. Psychologists traditionally treat patients with mental and emotional problems, but they also serve as scientists researching the phenomenon of human, and sometimes non-human, behavior. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. They gather their information by observations, interviews, surveys, and other methods. In some cases, computers are used to collect data as they measure how people behave in response to pictures, words, symbols, or other stimuli. Some types of experiments cannot be done on people because the process would be too long, expensive, dangerous, or unfair. Psychologists conduct both basic and applied research, serve as consultants to communities and organizations, diagnose and treat people, test intelligence and personality, and teach future psychologists and other types of students. Without formal research methods, psychology would become mere speculation and commonsense about human behavior, based on personal experience. Psychology shares other things with natural sciences, as well. For example, a good psychological theory may be possible to prove wrong.
