Reaching New Heights just like a Mockingbird As children age, they will hit a phase of puberty. What puberty does to these young kids is to turn them into a men or women. These are mostly are mostly shown in literature writing, especially in To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The kids in the book are maturing by their surroundings, however their surroundings are not the major factors for their maturity but Atticus Finch, their father is. In the novel Jem Finch matures intellectually, emotionally, and socially, through his experiences due to his father in Maycomb, Alabama.
The son of Atticus Finch develops intellectually. Near the end of part one, Jem realizes that his father is capable of more things than he knows. Jem says to Scout as a big brother, “Naw, Scout, it's something you

After Tom’s tragic death, Jem became conscious about Boo Radley. Jem said to scout, “I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in the house all this time. It's because he wants to stay inside” (Lee 304). By Jem applying his understanding of Tom to Boo he notices that both are innocent Mockingbirds, but still get hated for their skin colour. Tom just wanted to help the town, but he got accused for rape which he did not commit from helping out. So Jem thinks Boo stays up in his house minding his own business is because Boo doesn’t want more rumors added against him. After Jem witnessing a innocent person being accused for rape he did not do, Jem feels sorry for him. Jem said in a sorrowful voice, “I never wanta hear about the courthouse again, ever, ever, you hear me? You hear me? Don't you ever say one word to me about it again, you her? Now go on!” (Lee 331). Jem displayed emotion for Tom because he believed his father was doing the right thing by defending a black man for something he did not do. This means Jem is becoming more of a man, like his father.
