In the play, A Midsummer's Night Dream, Puck, the jester, is a very important and meaningful character. Puck is introduced in Act two as fairy who is playful. He creates many of the issues that happen throughout. He is the closest thing to the protagonist in the play. Puck uses his quick-witted and sly personality to mess with people. He likes to create trouble and make other fairies laugh. Puck is the jester of Oberon. His job is to make Oberon, the King of all fairies, laugh. In addition to making Oberon laugh, Puck does chores and tasks for Oberon that Oberon orders him to do. Puck loves to do these tasks because they often bring out his bright and mischievous side. He often shape-shifts or changes his voice to please the fairies. Puck demonstrates his clever and mischievous personality throughout the play.
Puck uses his clever mind to fix bad situations and make fairies laugh. He often is in the middle of tricky predicaments because of the way he deceives people. But, he always is able to restore peace because he can think and understand things quickly. Puck is able to utilize his shape-shifting abilities so well because of his cleverness. He is the closest thing to Shakespeare in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Puck’s Shakespeare parallel is best demonstrated through his last passage where he talks as if he is the composer. Also, because of his irresponsible actions, Puck creates many of the complications and therefore develops the plot. He messes with the fate of love creating chaos and fights that do not help anyone.
