The Good; The Bad; The Abuse Open a newspaper: Go to the pet section, and look at all the dogs. What do you see? I see about 100 dogs for sale in ads. Where do they come from? How are there so many? But the thing is they are the dogs you see in pet stores, the ones you buy from brokers. And yet, they are there because they are too sick to be sold. So, instead, they sell them to you. There are an estimated 10,000 Puppy Mills in the U.S. today. However, over 2 million puppies are bred from just one in a single year. And still, out of all of those 1.2 million end up in shelters. Those are the ads you are seeing in the newspaper I am seeing. So, how did the delightful turn into unappealing and then turn into mistreatment? How did puppy mills start and why? This is the question.

Puppy mills started in Post- World War II. Farmers were looking for an alternative, so they started breeding purebred dogs. This resulted in the commercial dog breeding business. As this so-called business started to grow, more smaller and bigger companies came to life with the same idea. Around

But you can't believe everyone, can you? 6% of dogs don't trust humans at all. 15% of dogs have very little confidence in humans. 25% of dogs are moderately trusting. 14% of dogs are very trusting. And finally, 41% is sensitive to who he or she has confidence in. Why though? They come from such bad backgrounds, and they are abused so much that they aren't used to being loved. You could get a puppy that you think is fine but then have them attack you when you get close to them. We adopted my dog and although she is fine with my dad and her vet, she gets scared of other older men. She is very picky about who she trusts. I wouldn't blame her though we know where she is from but we don't know her background and that's a big thing to know. Was she/he abused? Who abused her/him?
