Puritanism was introduced to America in the early 1600s. It first became known of in England in the 1500s. The English reformers of this Puritan era were very strict and judgmental towards the people that practiced and followed the Bible as a way of life. The Puritans felt they needed to live a life of “pure” intentions. These English reformers were judged and hated and called hypocrites. The Puritan’s era came from a group of English Protestant and become more noted in the 16th and 17th century. It had come from a new world migration from early English. The migration consisted of many families. Migrating to what is now known as New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut were all areas that these puritan families had moved to. “Puritanism contained with in itself the seed of its own fragmentation.” (Andrew Delbanco, 4). This religion sparked up a lot of tension during this era. When witch hunts began and anyone who was claimed to be ‘impure’ was accused of being a witch. Persecution was also a big part throughout the Witch Trials. The Puritan group began to seclude themselves from any and all churches that had been in the local area. Reason being they felt like they needed to be isolated for others to take Puritanism serious. “Christian activist were beginning to stir and kick with in the English mother country. These were the people who sparked the English Reformation” (Gavin Finely, 1). The Puritans grew like any other religion yet, they were called as hypocrites, incompetent and “enemies as hairsplitters who slavishly followed their Bibles as a daily guide.” (Puritanism, 1).
