Puritans founded New England in the early 1600s as a place to be free from religious persecution; overtime, the Puritans fear of the devil influenced New England to have a theocratic government, develop a puritan work ethic for the economy, and establish a strong sense of community.

With the great puritan migration, it solidified the religion in New England leading to the formation of a theocratic government. The puritan faith created a sense of unity and promoted the fear of the devil. (Document 3) As a result of this fear of the devil, the Puritans formed a tightly knit community that was led by the visible saints or elect. With the community believing in their faith and trusting the visible saints or elect, it impacted the formation of
