Puritan’s Dilemma: The story of John Winthrop perfectly is an American history book that perfectly describes the life of the Puritan John Winthrop and how he led many English puritans. The story also talks about how they want to secure and preserve their religion and morality by secretly escaping England without anyone noticing them since they have been persecuted for their religion and heading to New England. Edmund S. Morgan is the author of this story. He is an American Historian who even though was an atheists , had deep respect for puritan’s and their culture. Morgan specialized in American Colonial history and covered many topics including Puritanism. The Puritan Dilemma discusses how John Winthrop struggled with being a Puritan and living in the outside world at the same time. He also struggled with making a decision to either leave England and live a life of purity or become a better man by staying and become a person who can lead the rest to become better Christians hence the title Puritan dilemma.
The Massachusetts Bay Colony may be considered partially strict since they aren’t open to any ideas but only to ideas found in the bible. For that reason Anne Hutchinson, who was also a Puritan, used to give bible studies to women but later on started interpreting the bible on her own causing a lot of problems.
