On April 18, 1688, Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery, the first written protest against African American slavery on American continent, was signed by group of Quakers. In the petition, Francis Daniel Pastorius along with three other Quakers argued that “oppression of blacks was no more acceptable than the oppression of Quakers in Europe” as well as warned the possibility of slave revolts leading to further discouragement of potential european settlers from emigration. Their primary argument appealed to the Bible’s Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” suggesting that all men be treated equally regardless of the color of their skin.
