Typically, people marry for love, but in the Middle Ages that was rarely ever the case.
King Henry VIII had six wives that were mostly used to get a male heir. Anne Boleyn was Henry’s second of six wives. She did not give him a male heir like he needed. Anne was one of two of the King’s wives that were executed. Queen Anne Boleyn was arguably King Henry VIII’s most interesting wife. Contrary to what many might think, Anne Boleyn, an English woman, grew up in France. She lived in France for many years, and was educated under the French queen, Claude. This education influenced her in many ways. She became an accomplished musician, singer, and dancer. No one even noticed that this, what seemed to be woman of France, was actually an English woman. It is noted by Lancelot de Carles that “you would have never taken her for an English woman in her manner and behavior” (David Starkey 263). When Anne was recalled back to England because the French and English war had started, her life suddenly changed. Anne was destined to be a queen, and she knew it the minute she stepped foot on English court. At age 20 she was thrown into the English Court and the marriage market. She was accused of invalid charges of witchcraft, incest, adultery, and conspiracy against the king. Henry had her locked in the Tower of England before the trial.
