There are lots of people in the world who go through life either with or without friends. However, the ones who succeed go through life with friendship and happiness. To succeed and be happy in life you must have a good friend by your side. In this realistic novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick Max and Kevin, the main characters both have disabilities. Max has a learning disability and is a giant, while Kevin on the other hand is tiny with Morquio Syndrome. Unfortunately, in the beginning of the story Kevin and Max are both very lonely. After all, they become very good friends and go on quests together and soar high above the world. They have ton’s of fun on their quests. However, I think that there are two very significant ones. To begin, I think that one of the biggest things is that you can always look back on the good memories. “Most of us go through life and we never have a good friend like Kevin ” (Page 159). As it states above, Max very hard time when Kevin passed away. However, he looks back on the good memories and remembers all the quests they went on and good times they had together in the time that they had. Max was very sad about Kevin but he got through it and remembered all of the good memories that they had together. As it is stated in Freak the Mighty also in life you always have to live the reality to succeed through life successfully. Additionally the author states on page 159 “So maybe you should count yourself lucky,” Grim said. I think that this quote is very meaningful because as Max takes this all into consideration, he realizes that he is very lucky to ever have a good friend like Kevin. You always need a good friend in life and good memories to look back on. Max looks back on all of the good memories and fun times that him and Kevin had together. I think that this is one of the biggest and most meaningful themes in the novel Freak the
