The main issue in the book deals with Lori and her mental illness. We see how it progresses little by little. We see her struggle with her inner demons on a daily basis. We are aware of the people who don’t think anything is wrong with Lori just by looking at her. There is also the issue of some people who don’t try to understand Lori or what she’s going through. They can’t be associated with a woman who acts so strangely. ‘The Quiet Room’ is divided into sections, and within each section we are introduced to a new time and sometimes a different perspective.

Lori talks about her childhood and what that felt like. “Growing up, I had always felt special. I was the oldest. I was the only girl. And I always liked having the center stage,” (13). This quote stands out to me because it reminds me of what the future has in store for her. “And I always liked having the center stage,” would become true in many, many ways. Another quote is towards the end of Lori’s summer. “Gradually, my mood began to shift, and the brightness of the world began to darken,” (5). This quote stands out to me because it marks the beginning stages of Lori’s mental illness. The book was beautifully written, and the journey the reader embarks on is like no other. I wish the book was a little clearer with some of the details. I would’ve liked for things to be a little more balanced. I think the book would have made more sense with clearer time periods and clearer characters. Despite that, ‘The Quiet Room’ is a wonderful memoir, and to anyone who is interested in reading it, I would highly recommend doing so. For a short while, it’s like living in a whole other world.
